TAVR Approaches

Parmley_TAVR4

TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, is a minimally invasive procedure where a catheter is used to deploy a prosthetic valve to replace a diseased aortic valve.

The TAVR procedure can be performed through different insertion sites.

Parmley_TAVRTransfemoral
In the transfemoral approach to TAVR, the catheter is advanced through the femoral artery in the leg to deploy the valve. This is the most common access site with the least risk.
Parmley_TAVRTransaxillary
In the transaxillary approach, the catheter is advanced through the axillary artery to deploy the valve.

In the transapical approach, the catheter is advanced through the muscular apex of the heart to deploy the valve.

In the transaortic approach, the catheter is advanced through the ascending aorta to deploy the valve.
